There is an old problem with the electro-mechanical protection relays. There is a lack of a disturbance and event recording unit for these relays. When a fault occurs, engineers check the operation of the relay and evaluate the condition of the substation equipment through which the fault current passed. Protection engineer can analyze the operation of the relays by viewing the waveform of the fault current, its duration, and the trip command of the relay. The protection system should be checked for reliability and safety during each fault. If the protection system operates correctly for the designed scenario, it will be reliable. A protection system is said to be safe if it does not operate under faults that it was not designed to trip.
Both features of the protection system must be checked in the design phase. But some transients occur which cause mal functioning of the protection system. The best way to find these hidden problems is to analyze response of the protection system during fault by viewing waveforms.
